patient of the day

a screening gauntlet, an all-women medical coven, and 200 episodes of saying the quiet part out loud

Elizabeth’s back after a week sidelined by COVID in the house, and she’s opening with the obligatory acknowledgment of the current media moment: a notorious documentary subject shares her exact name, and no, she still doesn’t need the joke made to her directly, but she appreciates that you all know it’s funny.

The real meat of this episode is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Elizabeth has notes. She’s pro-screening, pro-education, fully aware (her mom and grandmother both died of it) — but she’s done with “awareness” as the whole strategy, especially when the actual barrier is a healthcare system that makes you fight an insurance company for a referral before a radiologist’s own recommendation gets approved.

She walks through her own recent mammogram-to-MRI-to-ultrasound-to-biopsy gauntlet in detail, including a forced switch to a new facility mid-process, and the unexpected discovery that the all-women medical team there made the whole ordeal feel better than the fancier spa-like place ever did.

Good news: benign.

Also good news, delivered with maximum Enneagram-3 pride: she was named patient of the day.

From there she goes after the pinkwashing of the whole disease — the florals, the tote bags, the “brave warrior” framing that lets everyone else off the hook for actually helping — and makes the case for what real support looks like instead: money, meals, transportation, a break.

Tucked in at the end: this is episode 200, a number that snuck up on her, and a reminder of why she started yapping into the mic in the first place.

Subscribe. It’s cheaper than therapy and has way less insurance paperwork.
